Çalıkuşu - One of the best Turkish Novels and TV Series

"Çalıkuşu" is a beautiful title for such a beautiful story. I stumbled across this series while browsing YouTube for some Turkish music. How glad I am that I did! After watching online the series, I could not but watch a handful of episodes consecutively... They are that good. What I have noticed since episode 1 are the mesmerizing script and the great performance. It was as if the main characters, Feride (Fahriye Evcen) and Kamuran (Burak Özçivit), were simply poets loving, scolding, forgiving and teasing each other with every word.

The chemistry is obvious between the main actor and actress and no wonder they are dating now.

After my research, I was thrilled to know that Çalıkuşu is a novel by Reşat Nuri Güntekin (Istanbul, 25 November 1889 - London, 13 December 1956). "As was a Turkish novelist, storywriter and playwright. His novel, Çalıkuşu ("The Wren", 1922) is about the destiny of a young Turkish female teacher in Anatolia; the movie was filmed on this book in 1966, and remade as TV series in 1986. His narrative has a detailed and precise style, with a realistic tone" (Goodreads.com).

I love the story because of the strikingly realistic feelings of an innocent young girl who discovers the awes and aches of love and trust. Her charming beau is a handsome man with a charming personality. Feride is an orphan and Kamuran is her cousin. She was brought up by his parents. They, too, represent complicated personalities; you adore them at moments and hate them at others. They carry huge love for Feride and Kamuran, but in many instants, they are saturated with traditional and unjust ideologies.

Can't Wait to Read; The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert

Books! Wow reading must have been my oldest hobby ever! One book which I am thrilled to start with is "The Signature of All Things" by Elizabeth Gilbert. The book was published on October 1st 2013 and the reviews are quite positive so far. "Eat, Pray and Love" is yet another Elizabeth Gilbert novel which I adore, and I do not expect "The Signature of All Things" to lack the author's enchanting style and imagination.

Interesting Perspective: "The Tower and the Bridge"

Hey! Hope your Saturday is as pleasant as mine :) I'd like to share my current inspiration source: "The Tower and the Bridge" by David B. Billingon. I must say it is oriented towards engineering in general and structural engineering in specific. So, I am totally enjoying it! 

What is appealing about the book is its captivating perspective of engineering. Billingon doesn't approach bridges, networks and towers as dull expression of steel and concrete calculations but as an art...

As an introduction to his discussion, Billingon conveys the historical and political circumstances which launched the relatively new field of structural engineering. According to the book, structural art is democratic because it possesses aesthetic freedom withing the brim of efficiency in materials (iron, steel, concrete...) and economy! It would be relevant to mention that the usage of iron in structural design emerged following the Industrial Revolution and its prices were high, and , hence, the need for its optimal usage.

Another noteworthy point is expressing the difference between Architecture and Civil/Structural Engineering as being similar to that between drawing and photography! What a deep analysis! In addition, Billingon says structures relevant to structural design are usually of large scale and of single use in comparison to those of Architecturally based design projects. Structural designers follow delicate procedures to control natural forces and offer the produced form safe and enduring resistance. Architecture designers, on the other hand, approach the designed forms as means of manipulating spaces.

This is briefly what I read till now. Yet, I totally recommend it for engineers or any person interested in technology and evolution. It is not your usual engineering manual readings; it sheds light on the spirit and mentality lying within humans' innovation...
